By map, Boone, North Carolina is just 85 miles northeast of Asheville. Hop on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and you’ll add another 15 miles—and double the driving time. Add a couple more hours if you stop at every lookout to admire the view to take a photo of your dog.

For a few weeks each fall, the parkway boasts almost any color imagainable, as the sun repeatedly fights its way through ominous skies and lights up the decaying foliage. It’s something I haven’t seen since I was teen. Actually, fall isn’t really something I’ve seen since I moved away from the east coast, so to embrace it again, I grabbed Sunny and a pickup from my dad’s, and headed for the hills.

My favorite scenes from our adventure are highlighted here, though I could have included at least a dozen more of Sunny. She was the most popular pup on the trail.
